The Enneagram test is another personal development tool that I was introduced to at work. The Enneagram test is basically a method of understanding human development and behavior. There are nine different types, numbered 1-9. You may have heard people say, “I’m a 9” or “he is definitely a 6,” or whatever and been wondering what this is! The first step to understanding this test is to take it!
Here is a free test you can take to find out your type.
I would recommend taking the first test on here (as I think it is slightly more accurate) but the second test is a lot shorter.
I really feel like the Enneagram test helped me to understand myself so much better and gave me some insights into why I act the way that I do. It also showed me that I need to cut myself some slack! There are certain things about my personality and behavior that I don’t like. After reading my Enneagram type, I was like, you know what? This is me! Own it!
Any guesses what number I am?
I am a 5 (also known as the observer!) Is that what you thought? I would also describe this type as the thinker. I love information and knowledge, I am extremely analytical, and I love to be an expert on things. Does that not come out in the blog, or what?! I am extremely independent and innovative. I have a lot of interests (and I’m never bored!)
But something that is more difficult for me is emotional connection. I tend to be emotionally detached and keep my involvement with others to a minimum. Although I give myself a really hard time for this, I think it’s maybe time to give myself a little grace.
I am trying you guys!
The reason I think that I come across as detached is that I am always preoccupied with my thoughts. I am always in my head! I asked Tony which type he thought I was and he goes, “5. Definitely 5.”
I think what’s important about the Enneagram is that we are all a mix of types, and that not everything in the description of your type will apply to you all the time. However, there is typically one type that is true to your core and will not change throughout your life. For me, I think I am a 5 at my core, but I don’t feel like that is how I show up all the time.
Understanding your Enneagram type and the types of the people in your life is a game-changer! For example, if you’ve got a 5 in your life (that’s me!) there are ways you can relate to them. It’s best to approach me thoughtfully and give me room to think things over. I often tell my team at work, “I’m going to need to noodle on that,” I just need time to think it over! It’s best not to pressure me for a fast decision.
How can you challenge me? Challenge me to be warm and emphasize the importance of our relationship to me. How can you support my growth? Make it safe for me to share myself and remind me to let you know that I care. I really do! I just have a hard time showing it!
