we left san luis obispo en route to santa barbara, and on the way we stopped in solvang! solvang is known as "the denmark of america." it was settled by danish immigrants in the early 1900s, and looks literally just like a danish town (windmills, folk dancing, bakeries, you get it). solvang restaurant was nice enough to host tony and i for aebleskiver! solvang is famous for their aebleskiver, which is like a pancake, but formed into a ball. not sure if i am explaining that well, but it is very ... the madonna inn.
the madonna inn in san luis obispo (or slo as the locals call it) is everywhere on instagram. i kept seeing photos of it and told tony we needed to stay there during our trip down the coast (it is kind of spendy, but should be on everyone's bucket list for at least one night!) the inn was built by a couple back in the 1950s (alex and phyllis madonna), and phyllis must have done most of the decorating, as the hotel is mainly pink. there is also a lot of rock, copper, and some european vibes ... big sur.
after our picnic in carmel, we headed to big sur. big sur is a long stretch of the california coast known for the scenic views and steep cliffs, as well as the hiking and camping. the drive through big sur is about 85 miles long and we were not ready for how terrifying this drive would be. tony is afraid of heights and you are literally driving on the edge of a cliff for miles and miles (he was white-knuckling it the whole time). if you are scared of heights and doing this trip, i would do the ... a night in carmel at the hofsas house!
i am finally getting to share my favorite stop of our california drive, carmel-by-the-sea! carmel is a quaint european town just a few hours south of san francisco. we had heard so many wonderful things about carmel, i knew i wanted to stop here for a night. my favorite part about carmel was how charming and just sweet it was. i was enamored with the fact that there aren't any street numbers! a restaurant's location would be like, "5th avenue between mission and san carlos," and to get the mail, ... highway 1.
after san francisco, we started the drive down highway 1. we had a loose itinerary (we knew where we were staying every night), but other than that, we just drove and stopped as we wanted to. our first stop was half moon bay. half moon bay is a really cute coastal town with shops and restaurants. we had some sour dough bread for a snack. we hadn't had any sour dough yet in san francisco, and thought we need to at least once while in california! we parked at the beach and walked around a little ... first stop… alcatraz!
the first stop on our trip was san francisco to visit my sister! she and tony have been dying to go to alcatraz, so that was the first thing on our list. we got our tickets through alcatraz cruises, which is the official website for tours to alcatraz island. there are many unauthorized resellers offering tickets at higher prices, but this is the official tour, so make sure you go here! we took the "day tour" (if you are looking at the website), which included a 45 minute self-guided tour of ...
