Our mud room and laundry room makeover is done! It may not look like much, but its a huge change for me! All the sudden I actually like to be in my laundry room! It’s bright, less cluttered, and just pretty! This whole laundry room makeover started because our washing machine broke and so I got to order a new washer and dryer (thanks home warranty!) Because we were moving out the washer and dryer anyway, I thought… let’s make some improvements! Here are all of the details on our laundry room makeover!
This is the “before” of the laundry room. My main wishlist item was to take down two of the upper cabinets so that I could put a rod to hang my clothes to dry. I then decided that I also wanted to paint the floor! The floor is nice slate tile, but it’s just not my style so I decided to paint it! I figured if it looked terrible, I could always cover it with peel-and-stick tile or something like that!
My father-in-law took down the two uppers, and it was already such an improvement! I then painted the remaining upper cabinet and lower cabinet with chalk paint. This is the chalk paint that I used and then I used this clear wax to protect it. I kept the hardware that we had since it was gold and I actually liked them! To finish it off, I bought this shower curtain rod, and spray painted it gold with this spray paint. As far as the little details, I bought these fun gold hangers, and then found the plant and soap at Home Goods.
Here is a close-up of the washer and dryer that I picked. I wanted a top load washer, and after having front load for 5 years, I wanted something different. I looked at all the different brands and models and thought this was the best deal. Samsung has a newer version of this set (which I liked too) but the older set was a few hundred dollars cheaper.
Let’s talk about the floor! Painting the floor was definitely a risk, but I love how it turned out. I used this floor painting kit in charcoal. I put two coats of the base coat (the charcoal) and then two coats of the top coat (the clear). The kit is intended for 100 square feet, so if you have a larger space (like a garage or something) you would probably want to look into a different solution.
How you purchase the floor painting kit is confusing so I wanted to explain a bit. Find this box in the paint section. Within the box are two different small cans of paint. Take the whole box to the paint mixing counter and tell them what color of floor you want mixed. They will mix up the base coat (the color) for you and they won’t touch the top coat.
Here are the different color options of the floor I picked. We went with a dark option because we have a dog with dark hair and we wanted to try and hide some of that!
This little area is the last thing I did. I wanted an area for kids coats and backpacks that is right by our garage. These hooks were already in our laundry room, I just spray painted them gold. Tony hung these 48 inches high (I googled what height to hang for kids!) The storage bench I found on facebook marketplace!
Last thing to mention is the rug! This rug is washable, which was super important to me with all of the snow and salt in Minnesota. You just throw this right into the washing machine, so nice! I thought about Ruggable, but it was pricey and the rugs were two layers (which I didn’t want). I opted for something traditional, to make the room feel warm and more my style.
