A few months ago, I started incorporating collagen peptides into my daily routine. I add it to my coffee each morning and have been seeing great results. Collagen peptides seem to be a hot topic, so I thought I would answer some questions. I must admit, I don’t know all of the science behind collagen, but I have done some research and also taken some information from the Vital Proteins website as well (the brand of collagen peptides that I take).
What is Collagen?
Collagen is a protein found in our bodies and it’s responsible for the structure of our connective tissues and musculoskeletal system. Collagen gives structure to our hair, skin, nails, bones, ligaments, and tendons. Collagen makes up 70% of the protein within our skin, it helps our skin stay toned and glowing. The tissue that holds are bones, ligaments, tendons, and muscles together is made up of protein, and this protein to a large extent is collagen!
What are the Benefits of Taking Collagen?
Adding collagen into your diet helps your body to regenerate what’s broken! Our bodies do not produce enough collagen on their own and our diets don’t contain much collagen. Taking collagen is an easy way to boost collagen production in a natural way!
I myself have noticed improvements in my hair and nails for sure. When I took my eyelash extensions off, I had these short stubby lashes and I swear my lashes grew overnight!
Vital Proteins gives the following list of benefits of taking collagen daily:
- Glowing skin
- Youthful appearance
- Joint Health
- Tendon and bone strength
- Healthy cartilage
- Increased athletic performance
- Improved digestion
- Gut health
- Deeper sleep
Sign me up for all of these benefits, am I right?
How Do I Incorporate Collagen Into My Life?
I have been taking the Collagen Peptides from Vital Proteins. It’s in powder form and can be added to either hot or cold liquids (think coffee, smoothies, water). It has zero taste and zero smell (as least to me!) I add two scoops into my coffee every morning (with my cream) and it dissolves instantly.
They have some flavored products, but I have not tried those yet. They also have a collagen peptides creamer which I’ve heard is delicious (and two birds with one stone!)
Where do Collagen Peptides Come From?
Vital Proteins sources collagen from either grass-fed, pasture-raised bovine hides from Brazil (beef collagen) or wild-caught non-GMO red snapper off the coast of Hawaii (marine collagen). Note that neither of the sources are vegetarian or vegan, but the marine collagen would be a pescatarian option.
How is This Different Than Taking Other Proteins?
Collagen is made up of amino acids (Vital Proteins has 18 different amino acids in it). Other protein powders (like whey for example) do not have the high levels of amino acids. For that reason, you won’t see the same benefits from taking another type of protein.
Can Anyone Take Collagen?
I would first discuss with your doctor any concerns with taking collagen. It is considered safe for pregnancy and nursing, but again, discuss with your doctor before deciding whether to take.
