i am finally getting to share my favorite stop of our california drive, carmel-by-the-sea! carmel is a quaint european town just a few hours south of san francisco. we had heard so many wonderful things about carmel, i knew i wanted to stop here for a night. my favorite part about carmel was how charming and just sweet it was. i was enamored with the fact that there aren't any street numbers! a restaurant's location would be like, "5th avenue between mission and san carlos," and to get the mail, ... highway 1.
after san francisco, we started the drive down highway 1. we had a loose itinerary (we knew where we were staying every night), but other than that, we just drove and stopped as we wanted to. our first stop was half moon bay. half moon bay is a really cute coastal town with shops and restaurants. we had some sour dough bread for a snack. we hadn't had any sour dough yet in san francisco, and thought we need to at least once while in california! we parked at the beach and walked around a little ... first stop… alcatraz!
the first stop on our trip was san francisco to visit my sister! she and tony have been dying to go to alcatraz, so that was the first thing on our list. we got our tickets through alcatraz cruises, which is the official website for tours to alcatraz island. there are many unauthorized resellers offering tickets at higher prices, but this is the official tour, so make sure you go here! we took the "day tour" (if you are looking at the website), which included a 45 minute self-guided tour of ... all night long with royal caribbean!
this is just a random assortment of all of the party pics from nights "out" on our royal caribbean cruise. after eating dinner in the dining room, we always went and checked out some of the nightlife on the ship. we went to see a few different comedians, watched karaoke, danced, and checked out many of the bars on board. on a 5 night royal caribbean cruise, there is one formal night (photo above!) joe forgot his suit for formal night, so he rented a tux from the tux rental shop on the boat (they ... better belize it!
coco loco? you better belize it! the first stop of our cruise was to belize city, belize. we had originally intended to do a cave tubing excursion, but due to the zika virus, we thought it best to opt out. we booked a snorkeling excursion instead, and it ended up working out great! the excursion company picked us up at the cruise ship, which was super easy (and convenient!) and then took us out to the barrier reef. belize is home to the second largest barrier reef in the world, and it actually ... a fiesta in cozumel!
our waiter on the ship mentioned that the beers in cozumel were only a dollar, so we knew it would be a good day going into it. we didn’t plan an excursion for cozumel, we just felt like checking out the island. when we got off the ship, we took a cab to the main square. none of us had ever been there, so it was fun to just walk around, eat, drink, and shop. at the end of the day (maybe it was all of the beer), we decided to walk back to the ship. this was a questionable idea because it was so. ...
