Rosie and I made salt dough last week and we made the cutest salt dough ornaments! We did it last year and I had NO IDEA what I was doing. They still turned out great, but I did learn a thing or two for this year. See below for the instructions and my tips!
SALT DOUGH ORNAMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Ingredients:
- 1 Cup Flour
- 1/2 Cup Water
- 1/2 Cup Salt
Directions:
- Throughly mix all ingredients
- Knead in your hands for a few minutes until dough is VERY smooth
- Flour your countertop (or other working surface) VERY well
- Roll out dough with a rolling pin to about 1/4 inch
- Make hand or footprints or use cookie cutters to make shapes
- If you are making prints, use a bowl or other vessel to make the ornament shape around the print.
- Poke hole with a skewer or straw NOW so that ornament can be hung
- Bake in 200 degree oven for 2 hours
- Let cool
- Decorate (optional!)
Other Helpful Tips:
- This is significantly easier with two adults! One person can hold baby and the other can press hands into the dough, etc.
- Make double! These things are fragile and it’s obviously a possibility that one of these breaks over the years. If you have multiple, you won’t be devastated if you accidentally break one.
- If you are doing hand or footprints, make the print FIRST, and then use a bowl or other vessel to make the ornament shape AFTER. It can be difficult to get good prints (especially on a small target). The bigger the target the better.
- I like to spray paint the ornaments white. It’s simple, pretty, and looks nice on the tree. Matte or shiny works, whatever your preference. There are lots of other cute ways to decorate too, check out Pinterest!
- Any leftover dough can be used to make little shapes (trees, angels, etc.) which are really cute gift tags on presents!
