Rosie and I have been loving baby wearing with our Solly baby wraps. Baby wearing was something that I really wanted to do as a mom, but found it pretty intimidating at first! It took me until Rosie was about four weeks to try it and now we are hooked. There are so many benefits to baby wearing for both mom and baby, so I highly recommend trying it out!
Health Benefits of Baby Wearing
Health of baby: Baby wearing stabilizes baby’s heart rate, body temperature, and blood sugar levels. It can also and help with digestion, sleep patterns, and immunity.
Health of mom: Baby wearing promotes a quicker recovery, reduced risk of postpartum depression, and reduced stress. It stimulates oxytocin release, which is calming for mom, and results in feelings of love and connection.
Milk supply: Skin-to-skin increases prolactin levels, which is great for milk supply. I have struggled with supply and have been trying to add more skin-to-skin to our routine.
Breastfeeding: Studies show that baby is able to breastfeed better and longer with skin-to-skin. It’s important to start early (right after birth) and do it frequently.
Helps with transition: Baby is used to hearing your heart beat and voice in the womb, and baby wearing is the closest thing to that.
How Rosie and I Baby Wear
- Skin-to-skin at home when I am lounging around
- When I am trying to be productive at home (cleaning, laundry, etc.)
- On walks instead of using the stroller
- At events (a wedding, etc.) when I need to her to not cry and I also don’t want people touching her
- When I am by myself (or traveling) and can’t carry as many things (like a car seat or stroller)
Other Baby Wearing Tips
- Put on the wrap at home before you leave so that the tails don’t drag when you try to put it on in public
- Watch a video tutorial (a few times!) before attempting to put it on
- Try to nurse with the wrap – I have not mastered this yet!
- Try using for baby’s “awake time” – it’s great for cognitive development because you talk and interact with them while they’re in there
- Try naps in here to reduce flat head syndrome
