A few weeks ago I turned twenty eight.
I have to admit, 28 is an age that is affecting me a little bit. I know that sounds silly. But at 26 and 27, you’re in your “mid-twenties.” Now at 28, all of the sudden it’s expected that you have your life together. “How many kids do you have?” Um, none? “You’re not drinking, I didn’t realize you were expecting!” I’m not? Others make conversation about how annoying it is to mow the grass, shovel snow, (insert home related task here), and I’m over here like, yep still live in my loft downtown…
There are all of these expectations of what you are “supposed” to be doing at this point in your life. If this is sounding all too familiar I want you to listen to me. There is no age or order that you are supposed to do things. Whatever feels right to you, is absolutely what you are supposed to be doing.
You have plenty of time to have kids.
You also don’t have to have kids at all! When you’re ready you’re ready, and if that time never comes, that’s your choice and I think that’s amazing. I recently came across this book, What I Was Doing While You Were Breeding, and I thought, wow! you go girl! She really puts it all out there, challenging society’s expectations the whole way. And can we stop with all of the judgment? We do plan on having kids someday (by the way!) Not that it should matter if you don’t.
You have your whole life to live in the suburbs.
We live downtown and we love it. Yes, we live in 1100 square feet with very little storage and one parking spot. But we are also footsteps from more restaurants, bars, concerts, and sporting events than you can imagine. Sure our time will come. Yes, we go to open houses every once in awhile and dream about more space and a yard. But when we really think about it, neither one of us is ready. Downtown can’t get rid of us just yet.
You don’t have to grow up.
Growing up doesn’t mean you have to take all of the fun out of your life. There is this whole “I have to get the fun out of my system” type thing going on and I think it’s stupid. Just because you are 28 (or whatever age), doesn’t mean you can’t see the world, spend the day hungover, eat candy for dinner, or whatever wild stuff you used to do. Have fun!
