from the minute I found this little hippie paradise, I knew it was perfect for our honeymoon. after the craziness of planning a wedding, all we wanted to do was get off the grid and this zen beach retreat was it. when I say off the grid, I mean it literally. tulum is not on the power grid. there were no street lights, our hotel generated its own electricity, we had air conditioning only at night, and our room didn’t have a tv or a fridge.
we wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
don’t get me wrong, we were nervous about this! can we really spend a week here? the answer is yes. and we loved it more than any place we’ve ever been. that being said, if you prefer to stay at resorts when you travel, this place may not be for you. if you are looking to get away, just you and nature, this is your spot.
here are some random photos from around tulum. a hippie paradise.
we spend a week at cabanas tulum and it was perfect. we had a cabana that walked out to the beach. the cabana had a hammock on it so we could look out to the ocean. we mostly had fun just “hanging” out on the beach (pun intended. see swings below).
our hotel included breakfast each morning at ziggy’s, a restaurant in the hotel next door. i must mention that i love breakfast. well i love all food, but i really love breakfast. i think our favorite thing at breakfast were the huevos rancheros and the burritos! i also really loved this breakfast bowl that had all kinds of seeds, and fruit and yogurt. also, everywhere in tulum has the most AMAZING fresh juice. ordered it everywhere.
I must also mention that that hotel next door had a way better pool. they didn’t seem to care that we walked over there and used it. and it had the cutest swing ever. tulum is really into swings.
the tulum ruins are very close to the beach area of tulum. it is close enough to bike or a short cab ride (which is what we did). it was very hot! i suggest going early before it gets too hot and crowded.
never been more hot in our entire lives.
I couldn’t help getting my yoga on at this place.
we rented the cutest bikes one day and rode all over the beach side of tulum.
i got a fresh coconut from a guy on the side of the road.
as our one big “excursion,” we took a tour to chichen itza, which is one of the seven wonders of the world. it is much more amazing than we thought. we loved it.
i couldn’t resist getting my yoga on here too.
tony’ s favorite part of tulum was going into town. the town of tulum was about a 10 minute/$10 cab from the beach. he loves bartering with the little shops and talking to locals. we ended up getting a dream catcher (tulum has dreamcatchers everywhere), some local art for our place, and I got some leather items as well. in town is is also where to get the best tacos of all time. more on that later.
I think our favorite part of the trip was the food (but what’s new!)
ziggy’s: the hotel restaurant next door. the ahi tuna nachos are everything. i think i got them every day. if you buy lunch, you can lay in their beach beds all day. don’t worry we did that.
hartwood: extremely trendy (written up in the ny times) but an absolute must. they don’t take reservations and always have a long wait, but its worth it. we got there right when it opened and got in line and were seated right away.
posada margherita: amazing italian seafood in a pastel beach shack
antojitos la chiapaneca: its in the town of tulum and has the best tacos of all time (and i really love tacos) and it was SO CHEAP. i think tony’s and I entire meal cost about $7.
cenzontle (the “secret garden”): best “vibe” in tulum. we had drinks at this cute spot and loved it.
el tabano: really great food but SO HOT inside. we were used to hot and humid and no A/C at this point, but this took it to a new level! i somehow didn’t get a photo of us at the restaurant, but here is one of us at the hotel before we left. i also found a donkey on the walk over there.
bye tulum. we’ll love you forever.
