I have never been passionate about using natural skincare products. Instead of taking the time to research, I I would just use what I liked or what was cheapest. I basically didn’t know what I didn’t know. Lately, I have been trying to be more “natural” (the reasons for that are maybe for another post sometime). But I have this appetite to change what I eat, medicines I take, and also what I put on my skin.
After researching natural skincare for a bit, I found out that the personal care industry is not regulated like many other industries. Companies can use harmful ingredients and are not held responsible for the impacts. The U.S. hasn’t passed a federal law governing the cosmetics industry since 1938. As a comparison, the E.U. has banned or restricted 1,400 ingredients, and the U.S. has only banned or restricted 11. There are many health issues due in part to exposure to toxic chemicals. This includes asthma, cancer, and infertility. This is not just skincare, but in many things that we do.
BEAUTYCOUNTER
I got some samples from Beautycounter recently and wanted to try it out. I want to preface by saying that I am not in any way affiliated with Beautycounter. I just know they have a reputation of being standard setters in natural skincare, so I thought it was a good place to start. Beautycounter is committed to health and safety, banning 1,500 questionable or harmful chemicals, which is the strictest ingredient list in the industry. All while ensuring that their products work. Their mission is basically to get safe products into the hands of everyone.
I received 5 samples from Beautycounter. The products include the Routine Clean (cream cleanser), Gentle Exfoliator (polishing cream), Every Day (hydrating cream), Every Night (hydrating cream), and Any Time (eye cream). The products have changed names a bit (based on their website) but are essentially the same. I have to admit, I had to google what order to put these on it (because I am totally new to the skincare situation!) but basically you want to start with cleanser, then exfoliate, then use either the night cream or day cream, and then finish with the eye cream. The products are coconut oil based but are totally scent-free. I have super sensitive skin, so I love anything that is like odorless, colorless, etc.
CLEANSER
The cleanser was gentle and seemed to work well. It got all of my makeup off super easily, and left me with a squeaky clean face. I didn’t notice anything too revolutionary about this cleanser, but it got the job done. The cleanser is $28, but a little goes a long way. Based on the reviews, I think this would last about three months.
EXFOLIATOR
I loved this exfoliator! My skin was so smooth and shiny after using it. I realized my skin was way overdue for some exfoliation. A little goes along way with this one, and it recommends you only use it a few times a week. So for $34, I think this one is probably the best bang for your buck.
DAY CREAM AND NIGHT CREAM
The day cream and night cream were both super moisturizing and worked wonders on my dry skin. I think both of these products would be life savers in the Minnesota winter. The moisturizers are lightweight, which I really like because I don’t like to feel like I have a lot of product on my skin. The day cream is $45 and the night cream is $49, so a little pricey. I would use these products sparingly because the price is so steep, I did like the results of both though!
EYE CREAM
I have never tried an eye cream, but at 28 maybe it’s time? I used the eye cream only a few times, and haven’t noticed a huge impact, but most women reported seeing a reduction in both under-eye puffiness and fine lines (which I have both of!) The eye cream is $37, but worth it (in my opinion) if it actually does help with puffiness and fine lines. It is super soothing though, and has a cool feel on the skin.
Overall, I am impressed with Beautycounter’s products, but more impressed with their story. Why would I want to put all of those chemicals on my skin?! I find myself looking at the ingredients in all of my products and throwing stuff away! Natural skincare (and beauty in general) is something I want to keep researching and keep trying. Have you ever tried Beautycounter or any other natural skincare products? Let me know what else I need to be trying!

I love that society is becoming more conscious of what they put on them and in them – for themselves, the environment and the animals in impacts. You provide some great feedback about a specific product line. Thank you.

Thank you! I have to admit, this is something I haven’t put a lot of though into in the past but am willing to learn and change for sure!

I’ve been trying to make more of an effort to use natural beauty products. I’ll have to check out this line. There’s a new app called, “Thnk Dirty” where you scan your beauty products to see what type of products are in them. I have it downloaded but haven’t used it yet, but it may be worth looking into.
